“Ever since the creation of Food for Peace by President Eisenhower and the US Congress in the 1950’s, the ingenuity and hard-work of American farmers has been a huge force for good in feeding the world and fighting hunger where it is most acute.  Within the context of historic spikes in global food insecurity over the last several years, there is great hope in the progress that is being achieved to end the needless deaths of millions of children who suffer from wasting.  We have a cost-effective solution that is being made through a partnership between American farmers and non-profit RUTF manufacturers, and we have leaders from both parties in Congress and the Executive Branch that are making bold commitments to tackle this most fundamental of challenges.  This is the best type of American leadership, which reminds our international partners and those in greatest need of our nation’s ability to solve big problems, and of our enduring values and compassion.”

Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California

"Every 11 seconds, a child dies of malnutrition, tragically claiming roughly 3.1 million young lives each year. Rising inflation, food supply chain disruptions and global conflict is causing even more children to suffer. As a mother of four and new grandmother, my heart aches for the children who do not have the nutrition they need. The Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act helps bridge this gap to deploy low cost, evidence-based resources to areas that need support the most. I am thrilled we can get this bipartisan effort to combat global malnutrition officially across the finish line and will continue working on the Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights Subcommittee to end preventable deaths worldwide."

“I thank the House appropriators who have joined the chorus of diverse stakeholders who know that RUTF is a critical tool in the long fight to end the devastating crisis of child malnutrition, and it should be available to all children who need it. As an American farmer, I am proud to know that a portion of my crop will ensure that more of the world’s children will survive this life-threatening condition, and that U.S. farmers can help advance our nation’s efforts to end child malnutrition.”

The fact that children die of hunger when we have a simple solution to cure them is one of the great moral injustices of our time.

Our moral duty to save innocent children's lives

Kids with the most severe form of malnutrition are so emaciated that they can barely move and may be unable to cry from the pain and hunger they feel. The upper arms of these children are about 1.5 inches wide–the size of two adult fingers or a ping pong ball.

Malnutrition is a threat to national security

Child malnutrition is also a serious threat to America’s national security. In fragile regions across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, child deaths from starvation are one of the root causes of instability and radicalization, increasing terrorism threats and endangering U.S. alliances.

Food insecurity is A leading cause of migration

Food insecurity additionally threatens the security of our borders, because it drives global migration and mass displacement of populations. Food insecurity is a top reason for migration from Central America to the United States.

U.S.-Made RUTF Can Help Create A World Where Children No Longer Die of Hunger.

Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food–often called Plumpy’Nut, LifePack, or RUTF–is a life-saving U.S.-produced fortified peanut paste. It is over 90 percent effective at treating the over 100 million children a year who are at risk of starving to death.

Often described as a “miracle cure”, RUTF is essentially a sweet peanut butter paste that’s made from peanuts, milk, sugar, and enhanced with vitamins and nutrients that kids like to eat. The product revolutionized how kids are treated for malnutrition by making it possible for them to get treatment at home instead of at hospitals. It has a two-year shelf life, does not require refrigeration, and can be eaten straight from the package.

RUTF

just one Dollar a day $45 dollars a child

RUTF costs less than one dollar per day. A typical RUTF treatment regimen consists of three packets of RUTF every day for about six weeks – or less than $45 per child.

U.S. production of RUTF, which ensures children don’t starve to death, protects American interests while making a world of difference because it:
